Eight states sue OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT harms children
OpenAI says it has built age-specific protections that many other AI products lack.

Eight states filed lawsuits against OpenAI on Wednesday alleging that ChatGPT is an unsafe product that has harmed children and deceived parents, CNBC reported.
Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana each sued in their own state courts, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said. "OpenAI is hurting kids and they are lying to Iowans," Bird said.
OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company has built age-specific protections that "many other AI products lack" and is working with states on industry-wide policies.
"While no system can be perfect, we'll continue to work with experts to inform our work and build additional safeguards," Pusateri said. Florida's attorney general sued OpenAI in June.
