Kapta Space, a Seattle startup building lower-cost, steerable radar sensors for satellites, has raised US$24 million in a Series A round to scale production and meet demand for defence intelligence contracts, GeekWire reported on Friday.

The round brings total funding to US$30 million, following a US$5 million seed round led by MetaVC, a metamaterials fund backed by Bill Gates and Nathan Myhrvold, and a US$1.8 million Department of Defense grant.

Founded in 2023 by CEO Milton Perque and Adam Bily, both former engineering leaders at radar maker Echodyne, Kapta uses a metamaterial electronically scanned array to provide high-resolution imagery and ground-target tracking without the cost and power demands of traditional systems.

The money will fund manufacturing, spaceflight qualification and initial orbital demonstrations.
